Expect the unexpected
Megan is injured but recovering
It has been a crazy couple of weeks. We've been planning this bike ride for over a year now, testing ourselves and our gear, building up new bikes for the journey, etc. So at about t- one month, as she's done so many times before, Megan went to donate blood. That went as planned but on the way home, while walking from the car to the library, she passed out. Then, she got up but passed out again. One of those times she hit her head, hard enough to cause a skull fracture and internal bleeding. Thanks to... we don't know who, she received help and an ambulance ride to the local emergency room. After a few CT scans and a night in intensive care, the doctors said the bleeding had stopped and Megan was discharged. She's been feeling better but the healing has not been linear; we've been back to the ER once as a precaution when she was feeling particularly awful.
At this point we don't know what will happen with the Big Ride. We're going to play it by ear for while, focusing first on Megan's healing. It may happen that she is fine and we continue with the ride as planned. Or, we may need to make some changes to the plan.
Update: May 1
The doctor is recommending that Megan wait 3 months to give her injury plenty of time to heal. This is primarily related to ensuring the internal bleeding does not return due to the increased blood pressure that may occur while cycling. So, around July 14, 2025.
